OHIO STATE REP’S REPORT – WEDNESDAY, MAY 6TH

I have attached the NAHB “Key Housing Issues” report highlighting what NAHB has done on our behalf in these past month.

The quick summary report is listed on the first page with a more detailed discussion and many links for each subject on the following pages.

Please pay some attention to the “Industry Pulse Check”. This is a effort by our own Ohio chair person, Bill Owens to collect the ideas and thoughts from all members to plan ahead, make all changes needed and prepare our federation for NAHB’s 100th anniversary. I personally urge all EO’s, members (associates and builders) and even non members to spend a few minutes to complete the Pulse Check. Simply go to blueprint.nahb.org

Let me know if you have any questions or need further information.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Important events

I could probably say that each month.  In May we have a primary election.  That is when candidates from the major parties run to be on that party’s slate of candidates for the November General Election.  There are a number of contested races to proceed to the November election where the winner is formally elected to serve in that capacity in 2027.

To name a few offices; all 99 Ohio House Seats; 17 Ohio Senate Seats; all Ohio statewide offices; all 15 Ohio Congressional Seats and one United State Senate Seat.  This is very meaningful and deserves your attention.

At OHBA we continue reviewing many pending legislative and regulatory issues potentially impacting homebuilders, developers and remodelers.  For more than a year now wheels have been spinning looking for answers and, hopefully, solutions for the recently discovered housing shortage.  Today, our best suggestion is HB 361 sometimes referred to as the “Shot Clock” Bill.  Its main intent is to reform local government’s rules to include a meaningful comprehensive plan and limit the time local government must act on requested permits.

To the surprise of just about no one, some in local government find it unnecessary and don’t see the need for relief.
It has taken us a lot of time trying to get some legislators to understand the very basics of increasing the supply of housing; both single and multi-family.  Some of the lacking knowledge includes not being aware the land development is separate from the actual construction of the house.  The majority of the housing advocates on the statehouse street look for some type of subsidy as the best cure to increase the housing supply.  However, we see some recognition that excessive regulations may be partly responsible.

We will continue to explain to all that substantial regulatory relief is needed.

Our portfolio of actions will be on display at our summer meeting; details are listed below.

OHBA Summer Meeting, June 18-19, Marblehead, OH.  To sign up for the meeting or attend any of the events, please contact OHBA at (800)282-3403 ext. 1.
