EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
By Vincent J. Squillace
Executive Vice President
Association management conference
That is the title of the annual meeting of executive officers (EO’s) of HBA’s across the country. Over 300 were in attendance and all were eager to grow and develop as managers of our national network of associations in America.
Our affiliated associations make up a viable network of members to advocate the needs of the industry. Given the notoriety of the acknowledged deficit of affordable housing, we get to play an important role developing policies to ease the crisis. Of interest, this issue prevails in all area of the country. Many of our association professionals are making great progress. I must note this challenge exists along with workforce needs, excessive land use regulations and ever excessive building codes.
A disturbing coincidence is that everyone points the finger at local government officials and nimby’s as the major blockade. Despite sufficient data and study outlining how regulations and attitudes fuel the flames of unaffordability and scarcity, the crisis continues. Further, needless delay in permitting and forced litigation only adds to the negative pressure on affordability and availability. The problems have been identified (there are many contributing factors) now we need solutions.
Yes, I am fully aware of the difficult political position officeholders feel when confronted with housing issues. However, if a community needs more affordable housing, a community must respond. We all know the regulatory landmines which artificially inflate lot and construction costs. Allowing such policies to continue is not sound public policy. Sometimes the right policy is not the easiest from a political point of view. That is our challenge to continue to advocate for needed reforms.
The HBA affiliated network is formed and dedicated to undertake that challenge for the industry and for that sake all housing needs.
