Hello – goodbye
Typical greetings for this time of year. Goodbye to the old year; hello to the next. Same with legislative politics at the end of the term. The goodbye usually ends with a lame duck session, in a few days a new General Assembly is seated. Happens here and in Washington DC, adjournment, then a new Congress is seated and (this coming year) a new presidential administration begins. I have witnessed many of these events and at the beginning, we hope for the best result.
With a term limited legislature, the dynamics are continuous. With a new General Assembly not yet seated for the next two-year term, a number of House while members will be announcing their intention to run (a few against other fellow legislators) for an Ohio Senate seat at the end of 2026. I like most of them and wish them well, but we know their efforts will be aimed at getting elected the following year. As your chief advocate here, we will have to keep that in mind when doing our work on your behalf.
I could write a volume on the experience and outcomes of term limits, but will hold it for another time.
As the 135th General Assembly is now adjourned, we can close the books. Our Year End Review summarized another successful year. Thanks to our officers, we kept pace and did well. A new slate of OHBA Officers will now pick up the challenges to come for the next two-year General Assembly. This upcoming session will surely be influenced as all state wide offices are up for election and all current offices are occupied by term limited officials. And add to that, a US Senate seat will be filled to replace the newest Vice President; JD Vance. To mention the never-ending term limit merry go round, about ten current state Senators are term limited at the end of the next General Assembly.
A lot of political opportunity balls are in the air and we have a front row seat to watch it unfold. Our duty here is to watch it all on your behalf.
